Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. is spearheading efforts to accelerate the county’s transition to clean cooking through a new partnership with the Building Climate Resilience with the Urban Poor (BCRUP) programme, aimed at strengthening existing clean energy initiatives and positioning Makueni as a model for institutional clean cooking.
The Governor led a consultative meeting with a delegation headed by Benson Ireri, Head of the Clean Cooking Delivery Unit (CCDU), Office of the Special Envoy on Climate Change (OSECC), alongside representatives of UN-Habitat and BCRUP, to advance the initiative. Mutula highlighted the health risks associated with reliance on firewood, particularly respiratory illnesses, and underscored the need to expand access to cleaner cooking technologies. The initiative builds on the County Energy Plan 2023–2032 and the County Energy Policy 2025, while exploring opportunities for carbon credit financing through natural assets such as the Kyulu Hills.
The partnership will support investment planning, technical capacity building and the development of a county-level carbon financing framework to sustain the clean cooking transition. The meeting also agreed on priority interventions, institutional responsibilities and an implementation roadmap, setting the stage for Makueni to emerge as a Centre of Excellence for institutional clean cooking and climate resilience.
