The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) Acting Managing Director, Mr. Kipkemoi Kibias, has underscored the strategic importance of the 132kV Kwa Kyenza Sub-station in strengthening power supply in Kitui West and the wider Lower Eastern region.
Mr. Kibias spoke during an inspection of the facility by the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, at Kwa Kyenza in Kitui West Constituency.
He said the sub-station is designed to transmit 132 kilovolts, a capacity that will stabilise electricity supply, reduce outages and support economic activities across Kitui County and neighbouring areas.
The Acting MD noted that Kenya’s clean energy transition must be supported by strong transmission infrastructure, emphasizing that clean power can only deliver impact when it reaches homes, farms, hospitals and industries.
He added that the facility forms part of the 132kV Kitui–Wote Transmission Line, a key section of the Mwingi–Kitui–Wote–Sultan Hamud corridor, which is intended to enhance grid reliability through alternative power supply routes across Eastern Kenya.
Mr. Kibias said the project aligns with Kenya’s national development agenda and clean energy commitments, noting that reliable electricity is a foundation for growth in counties such as Kitui and Makueni, whose economies depend on agriculture and small enterprises.
CS Wandayi was briefed on the project’s progress and commended ongoing efforts to strengthen transmission infrastructure in the region.
