Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Hon. Opiyo Wandayi has led an inspection of the 132kV Kwa Kyenza Sub-station in Kitui West Constituency as the government intensifies efforts to strengthen electricity transmission in Eastern Kenya.
The CS was received by Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) Acting Managing Director Mr. Kipkemoi Kibias, who said the sub-station is designed to transmit 132 kilovolts, a move expected to improve power reliability and reduce outages in Kitui County and neighbouring areas.
The inspection coincided with the International Day of Clean Energy, observed annually on January 26, highlighting Kenya’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy solutions. CS Wandayi noted that more than 90 per cent of Kenya’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, including geothermal, hydro, wind and solar.
KETRACO officials briefed the CS that the sub-station forms part of the 132kV Kitui–Wote Transmission Line, a key section of the Mwingi–Kitui–Wote–Sultan Hamud corridor, designed to enhance grid stability through alternative power supply routes.
CS Wandayi said reliable electricity is critical for economic growth in Kitui and Makueni counties, particularly in agriculture and small-scale enterprises, adding that the government remains committed to investing in transmission infrastructure to ensure clean energy reaches all Kenyans.
