Ngoima Ladies Cup Champions Community Health Through Sports in Kitui

Matters of health and wellness took center stage today as women from across Kitui central gathered at Kaumba Playground for the Ngoima Ladies Cup, a grassroots football tournament aimed at promoting physical fitness and combating lifestyle-related illnesses.

The tournament, spearheaded by Kitui Township MCA and Kitui Central parliamentary aspirant for 2027, Ngoima, brought together several local teams including Township Ward Ladies, Ithookwe Ladies, Kaumba Ladies, and Kathukini Ladies in a vibrant display of talent, unity, and purpose.

Addressing participants and residents during the event, Ngoima emphasized that the initiative was founded not just to nurture sports talent, but to champion good health among women in the community.

He noted that regular physical activity, such as football, plays a critical role in preventing and managing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, while also addressing mental health challenges like depression.

“Women play a central role in our families and communities. Ensuring they are physically active is key to building a healthier society. This tournament is not just about competition it is about encouraging exercise, improving mental well-being, and fighting diseases that are increasingly affecting our people,” said Ngoima.

Health experts have consistently underscored the importance of exercise in reducing the risk of chronic illnesses, boosting immunity, and enhancing mental health. Community-based sporting events like the Ngoima Cup therefore serve as vital platforms for awareness and action, particularly in rural and peri-urban settings where access to structured fitness programs is limited.

The matches were marked by high energy, teamwork, and community support, with residents turning up in large numbers to cheer on the teams. Beyond the pitch, the event fostered social cohesion and provided a safe space for women to engage in healthy recreational activity.
Participants lauded the initiative, saying it not only helps them stay fit but also offers an opportunity to relieve stress, build confidence, and strengthen community bonds.

As the tournament continues to grow, it is expected to play an even greater role in promoting preventive healthcare, empowering women, and inspiring more community-driven solutions to health challenges in Kitui County.
