ST. CHARLES LWANGA SCHOOL CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE, RAISES OVER KSH 10 MILLION FOR NEW SCHOOL BUS

St. Charles Lwanga School, one of the most esteemed academic institutions in Kitui County, marked its 60th anniversary with a vibrant and historic celebration that brought together alumni, students, parents, staff, and dignitaries from across the country. The Diamond Jubilee celebration not only honored six decades of academic excellence but also culminated in a successful Harambeé fundraiser that raised over Ksh 10 million for the purchase of a new Scania school bus.

The fundraising event was spearheaded by Nicholas Mulila, Chief Corporate Security Officer at Safaricom PLC , In his keynote address, Mulila emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure to support holistic education.

“We are not just celebrating 60 years of academic excellence, but also investing in the future,” he said. “This new bus will go a long way in supporting school transport, enabling students to access opportunities beyond the classroom.”

Chief Principal Archippus Mwinzi expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who made the day a success, describing the new bus as a symbol of progress and transformation.

“This bus is more than just a vehicle; it is a symbol of movement, growth, and transformation,” said Mwinzi. “We thank all who contributed generously to this noble cause.”

During his remarks, Mwinzi also highlighted the rich history of the school. Founded on March 13, 1965, St. Charles Lwanga School was established as a Catholic institution by Kenya’s founding President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who laid its foundation stone. The school is located 4 kilometers from Kitui Central Sub-county and sits on 4.6 hectares of land. Initially a Catholic school, it was later converted into a government institution under the sponsorship of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui.

The school has grown steadily since its inception. A second stream was introduced in 1978, followed by a third in 2009. By 2014, the school was officially registered as a four-stream institution and further expanded to five streams in 2018. Enrollment has surged from 631 students in 2017 to 1,250 in 2025, cementing its place as a top pure boys’ boarding extra-county school in the region.

Among the guests was Dr. Vincent Munyoki, CEO of the Vincent Munyoki Foundation, who inspired the students with a powerful speech about determination and vision.

“You are the torchbearers of this great institution,” he told the students. “Work hard, stay grounded, and dream big. The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

As the celebrations concluded, it was clear that St. Charles Lwanga School remains deeply proud of its heritage and even more committed to the future. With a brand-new school bus and a reinvigorated sense of purpose, the institution stands ready to begin its next chapter of excellence.
