Thousands Gather in Matinyani as Bishop Joseph Mwongela’s Father Is Laid to Rest, Leaders Pay Glowing Tribute

Thousands of mourners on Monday gathered at Matinyani Ward in Kitui West Sub-County to bid farewell to Mzee Maurice Mwongela Mbunzi, father to Kitui Catholic Bishop Joseph Mwongela.

The solemn burial ceremony, held at his rural home, drew religious leaders, political figures and residents from across the county in a powerful show of solidarity with the family of the man described as a pillar of faith and humility.
Mzee Mbunzi was the father of Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui and Coadjutor Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Machakos.

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe led the county leadership in mourning the departed patriarch, eulogizing him as a man who laid a strong spiritual foundation for his family and the wider community. The governor said Mzee Mbunzi’s life was a testament to hard work, discipline and unwavering faith, values that were evident in the service of his son to the Church.

Governor Malombe noted that the late had raised a servant of God who continues to guide thousands of faithful in Kitui and beyond, adding that the county stood with the family during the difficult moment of loss.

The funeral Mass was presided over by Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria, who described the late as a devoted Christian whose life reflected commitment to God and family. He urged mourners to celebrate a life well lived and to draw strength from faith during moments of grief.

Also present was Rt. Rev. Norman King’oo Wambua, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Machakos, who condoled with Bishop Mwongela and his family, saying the Church had lost a steadfast believer and mentor.

Kitui Senator Enoch Kiio Wambua, Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo, county executive members, MCAs and other leaders paid glowing tributes, describing the late as a respected elder whose counsel and calm demeanor earned him admiration in the community.

Speaker after speaker called for unity and harmony among leaders and residents, saying such moments should strengthen bonds within the community.

The ceremony was attended by thousands of mourners who filled the homestead and its surroundings, reflecting the deep respect and affection the community had for the departed.

As hymns filled the air and prayers were offered, Mzee Maurice Mwongela Mbunzi was finally laid to rest, leaving behind a legacy of faith, integrity and service that will continue to inspire generations.
