World Bank–Funded Water Project Brings Relief to Mwakirunge Residents

Residents of Bwaga Moyo village in Mwakirunge Ward, Mombasa County, continued to reap the benefits of the World Bank–funded Water and Sanitation Development Project (WSDP) following a project visit by senior officials on 15 January 2026.
Lewnida Sara, the Task Team Leader for the WSDP, accompanied by the Acting Managing Director of the Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company (MAWASSCO), Habiba Ali, visited the Bwaga Moyo village water kiosk to assess service delivery and interact with beneficiaries. During the visit, the two officials were seen assisting residents, including villager Tsadza Mreje, as they accessed clean and safe water from the facility.

Speaking during the visit, Ms. Sara said the project had been designed to improve access to reliable water services for underserved communities, noting that the Bwaga Moyo kiosk alone was serving more than 1,000 households. She explained that the kiosk was part of a wider intervention under the WSDP, which had financed the establishment of 30 water points across Mombasa County.

On her part, Ms. Ali said MAWASSCO remained committed to ensuring efficient management and sustainability of the new water infrastructure. She stated that the partnership between the World Bank and local water utilities had significantly strengthened service delivery, particularly in informal and peri-urban settlements such as Mwakirunge.

Residents who spoke during the visit expressed appreciation for the project, saying access to clean water had eased their daily lives, reduced the distance travelled in search of water, and improved hygiene standards within the community.
The Water and Sanitation Development Project is a World Bank–supported initiative aimed at expanding access to water and sanitation services in urban areas, with a focus on low-income communities. In Mombasa County, the project has continued to play a critical role in addressing long-standing water shortages and improving the quality of life for thousands of households.
