The national and county governments have agreed to deepen collaboration to address persistent challenges facing prison facilities in Makueni County, with water scarcity taking centre stage during a high-level meeting held in Wote on Monday.
Kenya Prisons Service Commissioner General Patrick Arunduh paid a courtesy call on Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., where the two leaders held talks aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two levels of government in service delivery.
Addressing the meeting, Commissioner General Arunduh emphasized the importance of synergy between national and county administrations, noting that both serve the same citizens and share a responsibility to find sustainable solutions to long-standing public service challenges. He said closer collaboration was essential in ensuring that institutions such as prisons operate in a humane and efficient manner.
In response, Governor Mutula reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to supporting national institutions operating within Makueni. He announced that the county would facilitate the sinking of a borehole at Makueni Main Prison to help alleviate chronic water shortages at the facility. The governor noted that the project would not only improve conditions for inmates and prison staff but would also benefit the surrounding community.

The discussions also went beyond water infrastructure, with the Kenya Prisons Service pledging to enhance cooperation in skills development and rehabilitation. Commissioner General Arunduh said the service would deploy its technical experts to support vocational training programmes, a move aimed at equipping inmates with practical skills to aid their reintegration into society upon release.
Both leaders described the meeting as timely and productive, expressing confidence that strengthened partnerships between the national and county governments would translate into improved service delivery, better living conditions in correctional facilities, and broader community benefits across Makueni County.
