The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Energy, Mr. Alex Wachira, on Tuesday led the launch of key last-mile electricity connectivity projects in Kitui West Constituency, a move expected to unlock new economic opportunities and improve livelihoods for thousands of residents.
Speaking at Nzakame, Kwa Kihara and Kololo during the commissioning of the projects, Mr. Wachira said the government was intensifying efforts to ensure electricity reaches the grassroots, noting that access to power is central to rural transformation. Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, accompanied the PS during the exercise.
Mr. Wachira told residents that the last-mile programme is designed to bring electricity closer to homes, schools, health facilities and small businesses that have for years remained off-grid.
“Electricity is not a reserve for a few; it is essential to everyone,” Mr. Wachira said. “By expanding connectivity at the community level, the government is laying a strong foundation for socio-economic growth and an improved quality of life.”
He revealed that the government has committed KShs. 2.5 billion towards electricity connectivity in Kitui County, targeting about 23,000 households. The PS noted that Kitui West stands to benefit significantly, with power expected to spur growth of small and medium enterprises, enhance service delivery and attract investment.
According to Mr. Wachira, the projects are aligned with the national goal of achieving universal access to electricity and clean energy by 2030, adding that the Ministry will continue rolling out similar interventions across underserved areas.
He assured residents that the government remains focused on delivering reliable and affordable power, describing electricity as a key enabler of development rather than a privilege.
The Kitui West rollout forms part of the nationwide last-mile electrification programme aimed at bridging energy access gaps and promoting inclusive development across the country.
