Sultan Hamud Gets Major Boost as New Maternity Wing is Commissioned

Maternal and newborn care services in Sultan Hamud received a significant boost on Friday after Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., alongside Safaricom Foundation Chairman Joseph Ogutu, officially commissioned the new Mother and Child Wing at Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital in Kilome.

The commissioning ceremony, held in Kilome on January 30, 2026, was attended by Makueni Deputy Governor H.E. Lucy Mulili, members of the County Assembly Health Committee, County Assembly Clerk Hon. Ken Mutuku, senior county health officials, and members of the public.

The newly commissioned 50-bed maternity unit, now the second largest in Makueni County, marked a major milestone in easing congestion and improving the quality of maternal and newborn care. The modern facility replaced a 12-bed maternity wing that had long been overstretched while serving patients from Makueni as well as neighboring Machakos and Kajiado counties.

Sultan Hamud Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Stephen Mwangangi said congestion in the old maternity unit had previously forced expectant mothers to share beds with their newborns, compromising comfort and safety.

Despite these challenges, the hospital recorded 168 successful deliveries in December last year alone, a figure that underscored the urgent need for expanded maternity services in the region.

The project was implemented through a partnership between the Makueni County Government and the Safaricom Foundation, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and improving maternal and child health outcomes.

The initiative aligns with the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2023–2027, which prioritizes donor coordination and the co-creation of community-driven projects aimed at building a resilient and sustainable local economy.
