Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today commissioned the county’s newly installed traffic lights in Kitui Town, marking a significant milestone in improving road safety, traffic management, and urban infrastructure.
Following the commissioning, Governor Malombe presided over the issuance of digital driving licences to boda boda riders who successfully completed a comprehensive road safety training programme organized by the County Government.
Speaking during the event, Governor Malombe said the installation of the traffic lights and the training of boda boda riders demonstrate the county’s commitment to creating safer roads and promoting responsible transport services. He urged the newly licensed riders to adhere to traffic regulations, prioritize the safety of passengers, and serve as ambassadors of road discipline within their communities.
The Governor was accompanied by Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, who commended the initiative, saying it reflects the county administration’s continued investment in modern transport systems and public safety.
County Executive Committee Member for Public Works and Transport, Eng. Reuben Itiko, noted that the boda boda riders underwent intensive training on road safety, traffic rules, and responsible riding practices before being awarded the digital driving licences.
He emphasized that the programme aims to reduce road accidents while enhancing professionalism within the boda boda sector.
“The training equipped the riders with essential knowledge and skills to ensure they operate safely and responsibly on our roads. This initiative is intended to save lives and improve service delivery in the transport sector,” said Eng. Itiko.
The event was attended by several County Executive Committee Members, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), senior county officials, and other leaders, who applauded the county government’s efforts to strengthen road safety and modernize transport services across Kitui County.
The commissioning of the traffic lights and the issuance of digital driving licences are expected to improve traffic flow, enhance compliance with road safety regulations, and contribute to safer and more efficient transport within Kitui County.
