Boost for Maternal Health as Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. Set to Commission Sultan Hamud Mother and Child Unit

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. is set to commission the newly completed Sultan Hamud Mother and Child Wing at Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital on Friday, January 31, marking a major milestone in the county’s quest to strengthen maternal and child healthcare services.

The modern 50-bed maternity facility, which becomes the second-largest mother-and-child unit in Makueni County after the Makueni Mother and Child Hospital, is expected to significantly ease pressure on existing health infrastructure while improving the quality of care for expectant mothers and newborns in Sultan Hamud and the surrounding region.

Speaking ahead of the commissioning, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. noted that the facility reflects his administration’s commitment to investing in people-centred healthcare and ensuring that no mother or child is left behind due to inadequate facilities. He emphasized that access to safe, dignified and timely maternal care remains a top priority under his leadership.

The new unit is fully equipped with an in-built operating theatre, a newborn unit and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), enhancing the hospital’s capacity to handle both routine and high-risk deliveries. It also features a well-equipped labour ward with three delivery beds, allowing multiple mothers to deliver simultaneously.

In addition, the facility includes prenatal and postnatal wards, a post-caesarean section ward, a gynaecology ward and a Kangaroo Mother Care unit, providing comprehensive services for mothers and infants from pregnancy through postnatal care.

On the same day, the County Department of Health Services will conduct a free medical camp at the hospital. Residents will benefit from outpatient services, screening for non-communicable diseases, cervical cancer screening and other essential health services, further underlining the county government’s preventive healthcare agenda.
The Mother and Child Unit is a product of a partnership between the M-Pesa Foundation and the Makueni County Government. Its commissioning comes at a time when demand for maternal services at Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital continues to rise. In December alone, 168 mothers delivered at the facility, with health workers managing the high numbers despite space limitations.

With the new wing now ready for use, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. said the county is confident that mothers and newborns will receive safer, more efficient and more compassionate care, setting a new standard for maternal health services in the region.
