‎Former Harambee Stars Coach Engin Fırat Dies at 56 After Heart Attack ‎

Former Engin Fırat, who previously managed the Harambee Stars, has died at the age of 56 after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

‎Fırat was coaching Lebanese Premier League club Nejmeh SC at the time of his death. According to the club, the Turkish tactician collapsed at an airport in Istanbul shortly after arriving from Beirut.

‎His sudden passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from players, fans, and football administrators across several countries where he built his coaching career.

‎Time with Harambee Stars

‎Kenyan football fans remember Fırat mainly for his tenure with Harambee Stars between 2021 and 2024. He took charge during a particularly turbulent period for football in Kenya, when the national team was grappling with governance challenges and a suspension from international competitions.

‎With the team unable to participate in regular tournaments, Fırat had to rely largely on friendly matches and short training camps to keep the squad active and competitive.

‎Challenges in Kenyan Football

‎During his time in charge, Fırat frequently spoke about the structural difficulties affecting Kenyan football. Among the issues he highlighted were the lack of internationally approved stadiums and persistent administrative disputes that disrupted the sport’s development.

‎Because of these challenges, Harambee Stars were often forced to host what would normally be home fixtures in foreign venues, requiring players to travel frequently for matches.

‎Continued Links with Kenyan Players

‎Even after leaving the national team role, Fırat maintained strong professional ties with Kenyan footballers. At club level, he continued working with players who had previously featured in the Harambee Stars setup, reflecting the relationships he built during his time in the country.

‎A Lasting Football Legacy

‎Although his tenure with Kenya drew mixed reactions from supporters, Fırat remained a prominent and outspoken figure in discussions surrounding the national team.

‎His passing now marks the end of a chapter associated with one of the most challenging yet memorable periods in Harambee Stars’ recent history.
