The Makueni County Climate Change Fund Board is now fully constituted following the swearing-in of newly appointed members during a ceremony held in Wote on February 16, 2026, and witnessed by Mutula Kilonzo Jr..

The oath of office was administered on Monday by the County Attorney, marking a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen climate governance and enhance environmental sustainability.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Mutula underscored the critical role of the board in steering Makueni’s climate agenda. He urged members to serve as climate change ambassadors within their communities and across the county, emphasizing the need for proactive leadership in tackling the growing environmental challenges facing the region.

The governor called on the board to spearhead resource mobilization initiatives aimed at reinforcing the county’s climate action plans. He noted that effective funding mechanisms and strategic partnerships would be key to implementing sustainable solutions that safeguard livelihoods and natural resources.

Governor Mutula further challenged the board to take a leading role in addressing the environmental impacts of mining activities, stressing the need for responsible exploitation of natural resources. He said the board must guide the county in adopting and implementing proactive measures to protect residents from the adverse effects of climate change, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and land degradation.

In addition, the governor emphasized the importance of positioning Makueni to tap into emerging carbon credit opportunities as global momentum toward carbon markets continues to grow. He observed that with proper planning and governance, the county stands to benefit economically while advancing its environmental conservation goals.

The full constitution of the board signals a renewed commitment by the Makueni County Government to mainstream climate action, promote sustainable development, and secure a resilient future for its residents.
