Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Thursday met with Jeffrey Lehrer, the Acting Deputy Mission Director of USAID-Kenya and East Africa, to chart a transition plan following the U.S. government’s decision to withdraw funding for development projects in the region.
The high-level meeting focused on assessing the progress of USAID-supported initiatives and developing a clear roadmap to ensure their completion under county leadership. Among the priority projects is the Kamunyolo Water Project an ambitious initiative aimed at drastically boosting the water supply in Wote Town. Once completed, the project is expected to increase daily water reticulation from a mere 45 minutes to an impressive 7 hours, significantly transforming access to clean water for residents.
Governor Mutula reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining development momentum despite the funding exit. “We must move swiftly to bridge the gap left by USAID and ensure that no project stalls. My government will allocate the necessary resources to see these projects through to completion,” he said.
The collaboration between Makueni County and USAID has, over the years, yielded impactful community projects in water, health, and agriculture. The transition plan marks a new chapter one that will test the county’s resolve and capacity to carry forward these critical programs independently.
