Machakos County has recorded significant progress in improving rural infrastructure, with Governor Wavinya Ndeti announcing that over 3,500 kilometers of roads have been graded under the county’s flagship Barabara Mashinani programme.
Speaking during her State of the County Address at the Machakos County Assembly Chambers, Governor Ndeti underscored her administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming grassroots infrastructure and enhancing connectivity across the county.
“Our Barabara Mashinani focuses on the roads that were previously unclassified or entirely impassable. So far, we have graded 3,500 kilometers,” the Governor stated.
She emphasized that the initiative was deliberately designed to target neglected rural roads that for years had remained inaccessible, especially during rainy seasons. According to the Governor, improving these roads has not only eased transport challenges for residents but also opened up remote areas for economic activities, trade, education, and healthcare access.
Governor Ndeti noted that accessible road networks are key drivers of economic growth, particularly in agricultural zones where farmers rely on dependable transport routes to deliver produce to markets. She added that the grading works have significantly reduced travel time, lowered transportation costs, and enhanced security by ensuring better mobility.
The Governor reaffirmed her administration’s dedication to equitable development, stressing that no ward would be left behind in the ongoing infrastructure transformation. She described Barabara Mashinani as a people-centered programme aimed at restoring dignity to rural communities by connecting them to opportunities.
Her address painted a picture of a county steadily laying down foundational infrastructure to spur long-term growth, with roads taking center stage as a catalyst for development.
As the county moves forward, Governor Wavinya Ndeti maintained that her government will continue prioritizing impactful projects that directly improve the livelihoods of Machakos residents.
