The County Government of Machakos is demonstrating decisive leadership in protecting its agricultural sector following the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Athi River, Mavoko Sub-County. Under the stewardship of Wavinya Ndeti, the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, Livestock, and Co-operative Development (Veterinary Services) has rolled out a rapid, countywide intervention aimed at containing the disease and securing farmers’ economic stability.
At the heart of this response is a free mass vaccination campaign targeting livestock across all 40 wards. This proactive initiative underscores the county’s commitment to minimizing losses, safeguarding food systems, and strengthening resilience among livestock farmers.
Farmers have been urged to actively participate in the exercise by preparing vaccination crushes and organizing designated sites to facilitate efficient service delivery. This collaborative approach ensures maximum reach while reinforcing community involvement in disease control efforts.
Governor Ndeti’s administration continues to prioritize the livestock value chain as a key pillar of economic empowerment. By investing in disease prevention and control, the county is not only protecting livestock health but also enhancing productivity, stabilizing incomes, and improving market confidence.
Through swift action, strategic planning, and farmer-centered policies, Governor Wavinya Ndeti is reaffirming her administration’s dedication to building a sustainable and prosperous agricultural sector one where farmers are protected, empowered, and positioned for long term growth.
