Kitui Assembly Committee Flags Non-Functional Projects in Kyangwithya West and Kanyangi

A County Assembly committee led by Kitui Deputy Speaker and Kyangwithya West MCA Christopher Nzilu Nzioka on Friday, January 16, 2026, conducted an oversight visit in Kyangwithya West and Kanyangi wards to assess county-funded projects.

Speaking to the press, Nzilu said the exercise revealed several incomplete and non-functional projects, with residents calling for urgent intervention to ensure value for public funds. He cited the Mulutu–Ithookwe road, noting that despite the Bill of Quantities indicating completion up to Ithookwe, works ended at Mathunzini. Residents recommended that the road be completed as planned. At Mulutu, a collapsed boda boda shade was also flagged, with calls for its reconstruction.

The committee inspected Kandandu ECDE, which is non-functional, forcing children aged six years to walk up to five kilometres to schools in Ithiani, Kilimenza, and Kaliakakya. Similar concerns were raised at AIC Nzalwani ECDE, which has remained closed since 2023, pushing learners to travel about four kilometres to neighbouring centres.

In Ngengeka, residents requested repainting of a rusting boda boda shade, cleaning of the market, and installation of security lighting. The team also found Kilevu–Nzalwani and Kavuta boreholes non-functional despite adequate budgeting, recommending that the county executive equip and operationalize them. At Kakuuni Playground, a large gully was identified as a safety risk requiring urgent repair.

Nzilu said the committee had received proposals from residents and will compile a report to be debated by the Assembly and forwarded to the county executive for implementation. He urged leaders to support the Assembly’s oversight role to ensure residents receive quality and efficient services.
