The Catholic Diocese of Kitui has expanded its pastoral footprint in Kitui West following the official inauguration of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish in Iiani, bringing the total number of parishes in the diocese to 37.
Presiding over the ceremony, the diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mwongela, said the establishment of the new parish was a deliberate pastoral decision aimed at bringing the Church closer to the faithful. He explained that the parish was created through the reorganisation of sections drawn from Muthale, Nguutani and Katutu parishes to improve accessibility to spiritual services and strengthen evangelisation at the grassroots.
The Bishop noted that the new parish would be under the leadership of Fr. Charles Kitheka, who will be assisted by Fr. Cyprian Kaleve, and expressed confidence that the clergy would provide strong spiritual guidance to the growing Christian community in the area.
He further observed that the parish had been structured to include several outstations dedicated to different saints, including St. Peter Kakeani, St. Luke Matinga and St. Paul Ngomola, a move he said was intended to promote inclusivity, participation and a deeper sense of belonging among the faithful.
While addressing members of the press after the ceremony, Bishop Mwongela used the occasion to make a broader civic appeal, calling on security agencies and those tasked with maintaining law and order to diligently execute their duties for the good of society. He also urged road users to exercise caution, especially during this period when traffic is expected to increase.
The Bishop paid special attention to students who are reporting back to school, wishing them a successful first term and encouraging them to remain disciplined and focused on their studies.
Echoing sentiments previously shared by Bishop Vincent Munyoki, he cautioned motorists against driving while fatigued, stressing that adequate rest was essential in reducing road accidents.
He emphasized that responsible driving was a shared duty that could save lives and protect families.
The inauguration of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Parish was described as a significant milestone for the diocese, not only in strengthening the Catholic presence in Kitui West but also in promoting community cohesion, spiritual growth and social responsibility.
