‎Makueni County Launches Tough Digital Crackdown on Drug Theft as Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. Steps Up Health Sector Reforms

Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has unveiled a comprehensive digital system to monitor the administration and distribution of medicine across public health facilities in Makueni County, in a bold move aimed at sealing corruption loopholes and eliminating drug theft. Speaking in Nzayo, Ivingoni/Nzambani Ward, on March 4, 2026, the Governor said the new technology-driven platform will enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the county’s healthcare system.

‎Governor Mutula emphasized that the system will track pharmaceutical supplies from the point of delivery to prescription, ensuring that medical stocks are properly accounted for and reach the intended patients. He noted that medicine theft and misuse not only undermine public trust but also put lives at risk, particularly among vulnerable residents who depend on public facilities for treatment. The rollout of the digital monitoring framework, he said, underscores his administration’s firm commitment to safeguarding public resources and strengthening service delivery.

‎The Governor further highlighted ongoing investments in healthcare infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to expand access to quality services. Construction is underway for a Sh34 million hospital in Kambu and a Sh70 million facility in Kibwezi, with another project planned for Kinyambu. He reiterated that these developments complement the county’s Universal Health Coverage programme, which is designed to ease the financial burden of healthcare on low-income households and ensure that no resident is denied treatment due to lack of funds.

Governor Mutula made the remarks while attending the burial of the late Onesmus Kyalo Maitha, whom he described as a hardworking and community-conscious individual. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and pledged support toward the education of the late Kyalo’s children, calling on residents to remain united and supportive of one another during difficult times.

‎The introduction of the digital drug-tracking system marks a significant milestone in Makueni’s ongoing health sector reforms, reinforcing Governor Mutula’s resolve to deliver accountable, accessible, and people-centered healthcare services across the county.
