Makueni farmers are set to gain practical skills in modern farming techniques following the rollout of Ward Agricultural Demonstration Plots, an ambitious program spearheaded by the County Government of Makueni under the leadership of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.
The initiative, which aligns with the Governor’s manifesto to strengthen food security and uplift farming households, will see the establishment of 120 demo farms across all wards in the county. The demonstration sites will cover key value chains including apiculture (26 plots), dairy (22), mango (24), poultry (29), and tomato (19).
Speaking during a sensitization forum for agricultural extension officers in Wote on Monday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperative Development, Liz Muli, emphasized the importance of the program in bridging the gap between research and practice.
“These demonstration sites will serve as practical classrooms where farmers can learn hands-on modern farming methods. Through standardized procedures, clear timelines and well-defined responsibilities, we aim to equip our officers with the right tools to guide farmers towards higher productivity,” she said.
The training of extension officers is part of the county’s strategy to ensure that farmers benefit from step-by-step guidance in improved agricultural practices. Once implemented, the program will strengthen knowledge transfer, boost efficiency, and ensure accountability in agricultural service delivery.
Funded through the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project, the program is expected to make a lasting impact by enhancing food security, creating employment opportunities, and economically empowering farming households.
Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, who has consistently championed agricultural transformation as the backbone of Makueni’s economy, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to turning the county into a model of sustainable and profitable agriculture.
“This initiative is not just about demo plots it is about empowering our people, ensuring no farmer is left behind, and driving Makueni towards self-reliance in food production,” the Governor said in a statement.
With agriculture employing the majority of Makueni residents, the demonstration plots are expected to be a game-changer in translating policy into practice, bringing the Governor’s manifesto promises closer to reality.
