‎Makueni Governor Oversees Relocation of Traders Ahead of Wote Modern Market Construction

Makueni County Governor, Mutula Kilonzo Jr., has led the relocation of over 300 small-scale traders in Wote town to temporary trading spaces, paving the way for the construction of a state-of-the-art modern market. The relocation process began today, February 26, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition for traders.

‎The Sh350 million project, a collaboration between the national government and Makueni County, aims to transform local trade by replacing the current congested open-air market with a modern facility. Once complete, the market will feature smart stalls, advanced sanitation facilities, digital payment hubs, and improved waste management systems, providing traders and shoppers with a cleaner, more organized environment.

‎During an impromptu visit to the site, Governor Mutula emphasized the importance of a smooth and humane relocation process that minimizes disruption to traders’ livelihoods. In support of the transition, he personally donated building materials for the temporary structures, ensuring that businesses can continue operating while construction is underway.

‎Traders expressed gratitude to the governor for the timely provision of alternative trading spaces, noting that the initiative allows them to maintain their businesses without interruption.

‎This development is part of the county’s broader effort to modernize trading infrastructure and promote organized commerce in Wote town, ultimately benefiting both traders and consumers.
