The County Government of Kitui has clarified the circumstances surrounding the unprocedural release of 19 patients from Kitui County Referral Hospital on September 4, following a visit by former Governor Charity Ngilu.
Speaking at the facility, the CECM for Health and Sanitation Ruth Koki said the patients – 15 mothers and their babies and four other patients- *left without completing the required clinical and administrative discharge procedures,* with outstanding bills totalling KSh343,950.
The *former Governor has since paid KSh215,000, leaving a balance of KSh128,950.*
The CECM said the County *welcomes assistance to vulnerable patients but pointed out that all support must follow established hospital procedures.*
“We welcome support for vulnerable patients, but such assistance must follow established hospital procedures.” She said.
According to the CECM, patients unable to pay can be assessed through the hospital’s waiver mechanism.
Following the incident, *10 of the 19 patients returned and completed the required procedures,* while efforts continue *to trace the remaining nine.*
The CECM said the County remains focused on patient safety and is also implementing measures, including the 276-bed Mother and Child Centre, to decongest the facility and improve healthcare delivery.
