Wavinya Hosts CS Barasa as Machakos’ Climate Action Model Earns National Praise

Wavinya Ndeti has reaffirmed Machakos County’s position as a trailblazer in climate action and sustainable agriculture after hosting Deborah Barasa for a high-level courtesy call at her office.

The Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, accompanied by the FLLoCA task team, toured key projects across the county that are transforming livelihoods while addressing the growing threat of climate change. The visit underscored Machakos’ rising profile as a benchmark county in the implementation of the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme.

Governor Wavinya used the occasion to showcase how her administration has strategically deployed FLLoCA funding to strengthen farmers along the value chain, improve productivity, and promote environmental conservation. She emphasized that climate resilience remains central to her development agenda, particularly in empowering small-scale farmers who bear the brunt of erratic weather patterns.

“Our goal is not just to respond to climate change but to build long-term resilience in our communities,” the Governor said, highlighting interventions that integrate sustainable farming practices, water resource management, and ecosystem restoration.

The delegation visited projects along the Miu River and other rivers within Machakos County, where farmers are benefiting from climate-smart agriculture initiatives. These projects have enhanced irrigation, improved soil conservation, and boosted household incomes  clear indicators of a people-centered climate strategy under Governor Wavinya’s leadership.

CS Barasa commended the county government for its effective utilization of climate funds and for setting an example in locally-driven adaptation efforts. She noted that the progress witnessed along Miu River reflects how devolved units can take the lead in confronting environmental challenges while uplifting communities economically.

The courtesy call further cemented collaboration between the national government and Machakos County, with both leaders reiterating their commitment to scaling up climate adaptation programmes.

Under Governor Wavinya’s stewardship, Machakos continues to demonstrate that climate action and economic empowerment can go hand in hand  positioning the county as a model for sustainable development in Kenya.
