Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has called for the strengthening of a rewards-and-sanctions culture within county governments, saying employees who deliver exceptional results—especially those who go beyond their official duties—should be recognised and considered for promotion.

Speaking today, 2nd February 2026, during an awards ceremony held in Wote, the Governor said rewarding hard work motivates staff and improves service delivery. The event brought together public participation officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and other county workers who have shown dedication in their duties.

Governor Mutula praised the officers, noting that their commitment has helped raise the profile of Makueni County both locally and internationally. He gave special recognition to the Makueni County Fire Brigade, which has won four consecutive trophies at the Annual Africa Fire Mission Kenya Symposium and competitions. He described the brigade as disciplined, innovative, and professional in emergency response.

The Governor also raised concern over volunteers serving within the county government who have shown excellent performance but remain unrecognised. He challenged the Makueni Public Service Board to consider absorbing such volunteers into the county workforce and formally acknowledging their contribution to public service.
He further urged the award-winning teams to use their success to form partnerships that can improve productivity, including seeking international collaborations and representing Makueni County in different forums.
Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili echoed the Governor’s remarks, praising the fire brigade for consistently making Makueni County proud on regional and international platforms.

At the same event, Makueni Public Service Board Chairperson Benjamin Kioko Kasamba announced that the board is working on a policy to guide the recognition of officers who perform duties beyond their official job descriptions.
During the ceremony, teams presented trophies won in previous competitions to the Governor. The occasion also saw 19 Civic Education Coordinators promoted, while 36 officers received certificates after completing training in environmental and social safeguards, occupational health, climate change, and disaster risk management in project implementation.
