Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of the Edu-WISE project, a transformative initiative that will enhance access to education, skills training, and employment for young people with disabilities in Makueni County.
The partnership will see the project rolled out at Nduluku, MIVEC, and Kisingo vocational training centres, where learners with disabilities will benefit from a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Through the initiative, teachers and institutional staff will receive specialized training in disability inclusion, Kenyan Sign Language, and life skills, while the training centres will be equipped with adaptive learning materials and improved infrastructure to ensure accessibility for all learners.
In a major boost for vulnerable youth, the Edu-WISE project will provide 105 scholarships to students with disabilities to support vocational education, internships, and small business start-ups. The programme will also work with private sector firms by promoting disability inclusion in workplaces and organizing inclusive job fairs to connect graduates with employment opportunities.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. thanked the development partners for selecting Makueni as one of the beneficiaries of the programme, noting that the initiative aligns with his administration’s vision of creating an inclusive society where every resident has an equal opportunity to learn, acquire skills, and build a sustainable livelihood.
The Governor said the partnership will significantly improve the lives of persons with disabilities by strengthening access to quality education, empowering them with marketable skills, and opening pathways to meaningful employment and economic independence.
The Edu-WISE project is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and is being implemented by CEFA in collaboration with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), and other partners.
