Outrage as School in Kitui County Accused of Punishing Students Over Hijab

Muslim leaders in Kitui County have condemned St. Ursula Girls High School, Tungutu over allegations that five students were punished for wearing hijabs.

In a press statement, Abdulhalim Ahmed Salim, Sheikh Sidiq Abubakar, and Sheikh Muhammad Khatwab said the students were forced to remove their hijabs, punished, and had the garments confiscated.

They termed the actions unconstitutional, citing the Constitution of Kenya (2010)specifically Articles 32 and 27 on religious freedom and non-discrimination.

The leaders have now urged the Ministry of Education and the President to urgently intervene and safeguard students’ constitutional rights, stressing that the right to wear the hijab is “non-negotiable.”

Efforts by Lower Eastern Digital Media to get a response from the principal, Jacklyne Kusunza, were unsuccessful, as she declined to comment.
The matter has drawn national attention, with growing calls for accountability and possible legal action.
